RECONSTRUCTING Q

Luke's Use of Mark

The following table shows which Markan pericopes Luke expands and which ones he condenses. Passages that contain double tradition material are marked with an asterisk. The last two columns shows how many words Luke took to write what Mark wrote and how many words Luke used to writing something Mark did not write. I have highlighted cells with at least 18 words not taken from Mark. All of the examples with less words than this coming from elsewhere do not give evidence of another source except possibly the pericope on fasting. This leaves 18 (or 19) passages in which Luke may be drawing on another source (not counting Jesus' baptism and the parable of the Mustard Seed, where Luke has agreements with Matthew against Mark, suggesting that Q is a source, even though it is not new information but different information from Mark.
